{"id":322445,"date":"2020-04-20T11:57:22","date_gmt":"2020-04-20T11:57:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tehelka.com\/?p=322445"},"modified":"2020-04-20T12:04:02","modified_gmt":"2020-04-20T12:04:02","slug":"kashmiri-woman-journalist-booked-under-uapa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tehelka.com\/kashmiri-woman-journalist-booked-under-uapa\/","title":{"rendered":"Kashmiri woman journalist booked under UAPA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-322451 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/tehelka.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/masrat-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"329\" height=\"499\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tehelka.com\/media\/2020\/04\/masrat-1.jpg 329w, https:\/\/tehelka.com\/media\/2020\/04\/masrat-1-198x300.jpg 198w, https:\/\/tehelka.com\/media\/2020\/04\/masrat-1-277x420.jpg 277w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 329px) 100vw, 329px\" \/>J&amp;K Police has registered an First Information Report against a journalist Masrat Zahra, 26, for allegedly uploading anti-national posts photographs on social media.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Calling her a \u201cFacebook user\u201d, the police complaint charges her for \u201cuploading anti-national posts with criminal intention to induce the youth and to promote offenses against public tranquillity\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The complaint also alleges that the journalist \u201cis also believed to be uploading photographs which can provoke the public to disturb law and order.\u00a0 The user is also uploading posts that tantamount to glorify the anti-national activities and dent the image of law-enforcing agencies besides causing disaffection against the country\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">At the same time, the complaint advises the general public to refrain from misuse of social media platforms and circulation of unauthorised information through such platforms. \u201cAny person found indulging in such activities will be dealt with strictly under law,\u201d the complaint states.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Zahra has been a photojournalist for the past four years and her work has been published in Washington Post, Al Jazeera, Caravan etc.\u00a0 Journalist fraternity in Kashmir has opposed the police complaint against her and urged the government to withdraw it. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Kashmir Press Club (KPC) has condemned the \u201crecent cases of harassment and summons to journalists by police in Kashmir\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cWhile journalism in Kashmir had never been easy, challenges and hardships have multiplied for journalists since August 5, 2019,\u201d the KPC statement said.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>J&amp;K Police has registered an First Information Report against a journalist Masrat Zahra, 26, for allegedly uploading anti-national posts photographs on social media.
