{"id":321180,"date":"2020-03-20T03:10:16","date_gmt":"2020-03-20T03:10:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tehelka.com\/?p=321180"},"modified":"2020-03-20T03:10:16","modified_gmt":"2020-03-20T03:10:16","slug":"four-nirbhaya-convicts-hanged-to-death-at-tihar-jail","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tehelka.com\/four-nirbhaya-convicts-hanged-to-death-at-tihar-jail\/","title":{"rendered":"Four Nirbhaya convicts hanged to death at Tihar Jail"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-319570 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/tehelka.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/nirbhaya-case.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"691\" height=\"384\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tehelka.com\/media\/2020\/01\/nirbhaya-case.jpg 691w, https:\/\/tehelka.com\/media\/2020\/01\/nirbhaya-case-300x167.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 691px) 100vw, 691px\" \/>The four men convicted in the 2012 Nirbhaya gang rape and murder case were hanged to death at 5.30am today.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Mukesh Singh, Pawan Gupta, Vinay Sharma and Akshay Kumar Singh were executed at 5.30 am for gang-raping the young woman on the night of December 16, 2012, so brutally that she died of her injuries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Their death warrants were deferred by a court thrice on the grounds that they had not exhausted all their legal remedies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">A trial court on March 5, issued fresh death warrants for March 20 at 5.30 am as the final date for the execution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Several police personnel were deployed outside the jail to control a crowd that waited to celebrate the execution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">A doctor inside Tihar Jail examined the bodies of them after the hanging and declared all four dead,\u00a0Director General of Tihar Jail Sandeep Goel said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Hours before the hanging, the convicts approached the Top Court.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">In a late-night hearing, a Supreme Court bench dismissed final petition of the convicts, paving the way for the execution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cWe finally got justice.
