{"id":320664,"date":"2020-03-02T12:19:54","date_gmt":"2020-03-02T12:19:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tehelka.com\/?p=320664"},"modified":"2020-03-02T12:19:54","modified_gmt":"2020-03-02T12:19:54","slug":"delhi-court-defers-hanging-of-nirbhaya-convicts-till-further-orders","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tehelka.com\/delhi-court-defers-hanging-of-nirbhaya-convicts-till-further-orders\/","title":{"rendered":"Delhi Court defers hanging of Nirbhaya convicts till further orders"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-319570 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/tehelka.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/nirbhaya-case.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"691\" height=\"384\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tehelka.com\/media\/2020\/01\/nirbhaya-case.jpg 691w, https:\/\/tehelka.com\/media\/2020\/01\/nirbhaya-case-300x167.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 691px) 100vw, 691px\" \/>A Delhi court on Monday stayed the execution of the four Nirbhaya convicts and deferred the matter for further orders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">All the four convicts were scheduled to be hanged at 6 am on March 3.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The court deferred the matter as the mercy petition of one of the convicts is pending before the President.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Earlier in the day, Pawan Gupta&#8217;s curative petition was rejected by the Supreme Court.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Gupta had filed a curative plea before the top court seeking commutation of his death sentence to life imprisonment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">He was the last convict in the case who had not exhausted his legal options of a curative petition. The Apex Court has already rejected the curative petitions of the remaining three.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">On February 17, a Delhi Court had issued fresh death warrants against the four convicts- Vinay Sharma, Akshay Thakur, Pawan Gupta and Mukesh Singh which orders their hanging on March 3 at 6am.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">All four men were convicted and sentenced to death for raping a 23-year-old paramedic student in a moving bus in the national capital on the intervening night of December 16-17, 2012.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">She passed away at Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore while undergoing the treatment.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Delhi court on Monday stayed the execution of the four Nirbhaya convicts and deferred the matter for further orders.
