{"id":318798,"date":"2020-01-14T03:46:59","date_gmt":"2020-01-14T03:46:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tehelka.com\/?p=318798"},"modified":"2020-01-14T03:46:59","modified_gmt":"2020-01-14T03:46:59","slug":"nirbhaya-case-sc-to-hear-curative-petitions-of-2-convicts-today","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tehelka.com\/nirbhaya-case-sc-to-hear-curative-petitions-of-2-convicts-today\/","title":{"rendered":"Nirbhaya case: SC to hear curative petitions of 2 convicts today"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-305446 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/tehelka.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Supreme-Court.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"438\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tehelka.com\/media\/2018\/11\/Supreme-Court.jpg 660w, https:\/\/tehelka.com\/media\/2018\/11\/Supreme-Court-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/tehelka.com\/media\/2018\/11\/Supreme-Court-633x420.jpg 633w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/>The Supreme Court will on Tuesday hear curative petitions filed by two men convicted in the 2012 Nirbhaya gang-rape and murder case.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">A five-judge bench of the Supreme Court is scheduled to hear the curative petitions of two of the four death-row convicts in Nirbhaya case at 1.45 pm, sources said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The petitions have been filed by Vinay Sharma and Mukesh Kumar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Curative petitions are decided in-chambers by the judges and is the last and final judicial remedy available to a person convicted by courts of law.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">A bench of Justices N V Ramana, Arun Mishra, R F Nariman, R Banumathi and Ashok Bhushan will hear the curative petitions of Vinay Sharma and Mukesh Kumar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Two of the four death-row convicts, Akshay Kumar Singh and Pawan Gupta have not filed curative petitions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">On January 7, a Delhi court issued the death warrant against all four convicts in the 2012 Nirbhaya gang rape and murder case.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">They will be hanged at 7 am on January 22 at the Tihar jail, the court ordered.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The 23-year-old paramedic student was gang-raped and brutally assaulted on the intervening night of December 16-17, 2012 in a moving bus in the national capital.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">She passed away at Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore while undergoing the treatment.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Supreme Court will on Tuesday hear curative petitions filed by two men convicted in the 2012 Nirbhaya gang-rape and murder case.
