{"id":318046,"date":"2019-12-18T11:01:43","date_gmt":"2019-12-18T11:01:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tehelka.com\/?p=318046"},"modified":"2019-12-18T11:01:43","modified_gmt":"2019-12-18T11:01:43","slug":"delhi-court-delays-death-warrant-of-convicts-in-nirbhaya-case","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tehelka.com\/delhi-court-delays-death-warrant-of-convicts-in-nirbhaya-case\/","title":{"rendered":"Delhi Court delays death warrant of convicts in Nirbhaya case"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-300656 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/tehelka.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/jail.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"508\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tehelka.com\/media\/2018\/07\/jail.jpg 640w, https:\/\/tehelka.com\/media\/2018\/07\/jail-300x238.jpg 300w, https:\/\/tehelka.com\/media\/2018\/07\/jail-529x420.jpg 529w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/>A Delhi court on Wednesday directed Tihar jail authorities to issue a fresh notice for one week to convicts of 2012 Nirbhaya gang rape-and-murder case, as to whether they want to file mercy pleas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The development came after the Top Court dismissed the review petition of Akshay Kumar Singh- one of the four convicts and upheld the earlier judgement that awarded him a death sentence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Unhappy over the judgement by the lower court, Nirbhaya\u2019s mother Asha Devi broke down in court, &#8220;Wherever we go, we are told about the their (convict\u2019s) rights, what about our rights?,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Expressing sympathy with Asha Devi, the court said that they had full sympathy with her but was bound to follow the law that now required fresh notices to be issued for the execution of the convicts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The court has adjourned the matter till January 7.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The 23-year-old paramedic student was gang-raped and brutally assaulted on the intervening night of December 16-17, 2012 in a moving bus in the national capital.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">One of the six men accused was a juvenile.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">She passed away at Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore while undergoing the treatment.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Delhi court on Wednesday directed Tihar jail authorities to issue a fresh notice for one week to convicts of 2012 Nirbhaya gang rape-and-murder case, as to whether they want to file mercy pleas.
