Parliament passes a Bill that is patently unconstitutional and the battle ground shifts to the Supreme Court. Elected Parliamentarians are abdicating their responsibilities in favour of lawyers and judges!,\u201d Chidambaram said in a tweet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cThat is the price we pay for giving a party a brute majority that it uses to trample over the wishes of the States and the People,\u201d he added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The bill was passed in the Lok Sabha on Monday with 311 members favouring it, 80 voting against it after a heated debate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill seeks to grant Indian Citizenship to persons belonging to Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi and Christian communities who have migrated to India after facing persecution on grounds of religion in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh, if they fulfil conditions for grant of citizenship.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Former finance minister and senior Congress leader P Chidambaram on Tuesday described the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill as \u2018patently unconstitutional\u2019 He claimed that the elected Parliamentarians were abdicating their responsibilities in favour of lawyers and judges. \u201cCAB is unconstitutional.
