{"id":317485,"date":"2019-12-03T05:02:00","date_gmt":"2019-12-03T05:02:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tehelka.com\/?p=317485"},"modified":"2019-12-03T05:02:00","modified_gmt":"2019-12-03T05:02:00","slug":"cabinet-secretary-reviews-issue-of-onion-prices-in-country","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tehelka.com\/cabinet-secretary-reviews-issue-of-onion-prices-in-country\/","title":{"rendered":"Cabinet Secretary reviews issue of Onion Prices in Country"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-315335 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/tehelka.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/onion.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"543\" height=\"327\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tehelka.com\/media\/2019\/09\/onion.jpg 543w, https:\/\/tehelka.com\/media\/2019\/09\/onion-300x181.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 543px) 100vw, 543px\" \/>Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba on Monday chaired a meeting of the Committee of Secretaries to review the issue of rising prices of Onions across the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">In a video conference held with the Chief Secretaries of the 11 major onion producing states, the Cabinet Secretary was briefed about the various steps being taken by the States to tackle the rising prices of Onions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Chief Secretaries from Maharashtra, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana participated in the video conference.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The Cabinet Secretary directed the States that the overall availability of the Onions has to be beefed up, considering the temporary shortage, to stabilise the prices.The Centre has already taken a decision on not allowing the export of Onions during the current season.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The States were further directed to maintain considerable buffer stocks, impose stock limits on traders and to ensure strict action against hoarding.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Rajiv Gaubasaid that the Union Government has approved the import of 11000 Metric Tonnes of onions from November 29 to tide over the situation. The deliveries are expected from the last week of December 2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">This is in addition to the decision of the Government to import 6090 Metric Tonnes of Onions from Egypt on November 22. The deliveries are expected from 2nd\u00a0Week of December.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Cabinet Secretary directed the States to utilise their Food and Civil Supply Departments to procure and distribute Onions at reasonable prices.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Secretary Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Secretary Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Secretary Food &amp; Public Distribution along with other senior officials of Government of India also attended the meeting.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba on Monday chaired a meeting of the Committee of Secretaries to review the issue of rising prices of Onions across the country.
