{"id":315761,"date":"2019-10-18T05:52:20","date_gmt":"2019-10-18T05:52:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tehelka.com\/?p=315761"},"modified":"2019-10-22T04:28:20","modified_gmt":"2019-10-22T04:28:20","slug":"india-among-fastest-growing-economies-says-nirmala-sitharaman-in-spite-of-imf-projections","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tehelka.com\/india-among-fastest-growing-economies-says-nirmala-sitharaman-in-spite-of-imf-projections\/","title":{"rendered":"India among fastest growing economies, says Nirmala Sitharaman in spite of IMF projections"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-299648 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/tehelka.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/nirmala-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"552\" height=\"575\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tehelka.com\/media\/2018\/06\/nirmala-1.jpg 552w, https:\/\/tehelka.com\/media\/2018\/06\/nirmala-1-288x300.jpg 288w, https:\/\/tehelka.com\/media\/2018\/06\/nirmala-1-403x420.jpg 403w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 552px) 100vw, 552px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has said\u00a0that India remains among the fastest growing economies of the world and efforts are being made to make it grow faster.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Speaking to the reporters, she said International Monetary Fund (IMF) has projected a reduced growth rate for India, but the country&#8217;s economy is still growing as the fastest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">On Tuesday, the IMF slashed India\u2019s growth projection to 6.1 percent for the current fiscal from its July forecast of 7 percent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The finance minister is in Washington to attend the annual meeting of the International Monetary Fund or IMF and the World Bank.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Sitharaman said she is certainly not risking a comparison with China, even though the two countries growth rates have been projected at 6.1 per cent in a latest IMF report.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">She said the IMF in its latest projections reduced the growth rate for all the global economies. It reduced the growth for India too. However, even with that India is still growing as the fastest growing economy.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">As against India&#8217;s real growth rate of 6.8 per cent in 2018, the IMF in its latest World Economic Outlook released on Tuesday, projected the country&#8217;s growth rate at 6.1 per cent for 2019 and noted that the Indian economy is expected to pick up at 7 per cent in 2020.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The International Monetary Fund (IMF) on Thursday said though India has worked on the fundamentals of its economy, there are problems, including the long-term drivers of growth, that need to be addressed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cIndia has worked on the fundamentals (of its economy), but there are problems to be addressed. In the financial sector, especially non-banking institutions, there are steps taken now to consolidate banks.
