{"id":312394,"date":"2019-05-17T07:32:52","date_gmt":"2019-05-17T07:32:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tehelka.com\/?p=312394"},"modified":"2019-05-17T07:32:52","modified_gmt":"2019-05-17T07:32:52","slug":"saradha-scam-sc-withdraws-protection-from-arrest-to-ex-kolkata-cop-rajeev-kumar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tehelka.com\/saradha-scam-sc-withdraws-protection-from-arrest-to-ex-kolkata-cop-rajeev-kumar\/","title":{"rendered":"Saradha Scam: SC\u00a0withdraws protection from arrest to ex-Kolkata cop Rajeev Kumar"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-309157 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/tehelka.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/rajeev-kumar-300x155.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"515\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tehelka.com\/media\/2019\/02\/rajeev-kumar-300x155.jpg 300w, https:\/\/tehelka.com\/media\/2019\/02\/rajeev-kumar.jpg 615w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 515px) 100vw, 515px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The Supreme Court on Friday withdrew its interim protection from arrest granted to former Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar in the Saradha chit fund scam case and gave him seven days to approach the appropriate court for legal remedy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi also made it clear\u00a0that the CBI can pursue the case in accordance with law.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The court was hearing an application by the CBI seeking vacation of the order which granted interim protection from arrest to Kumar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The CBI told the top court that it wanted custodial interrogation of Kumar, who was earlier heading West Bengal Police SIT probing chit fund scam, as there was preliminary evidence that he had allegedly tried to destroy or tamper with evidence and \u201cshield high and mighty\u201d in the case.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">However, Kumar&#8217;s counsel had countered CBI&#8217;s submissions and told the bench that the agency wanted his custodial interrogation &#8220;just to humiliate&#8221; him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">A major controversy broke on February 3, when a team of CBI officers went to Kumar\u2019s residence to question him in\u00a0connection with Saradha Chit Fund scam. However, the CBI team was not allowed to question and were instead detained by the Kolkata police. Following which a clash broke out between the Centre and the Mamata Banerjee government with the Mamata sitting on a dharna against the BJP-led Centre over alleged misuse of CBI.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The matter then reached\u00a0the top Court which directed Kumar to appear before the agency and cooperate in the investigation of cases arising out of the chit fund scandal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The court chose Shillong as the neutral meeting place \u201cto avoid all unnecessary controversy\u201d and made it clear that no coercive action including arrest would be taken against Kumar.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Supreme Court on Friday withdrew its interim protection from arrest granted to former Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar in the Saradha chit fund scam case and gave him seven days to approach the appropriate court for legal remedy.
