{"id":311136,"date":"2019-04-09T09:20:13","date_gmt":"2019-04-09T09:20:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tehelka.com\/?p=311136"},"modified":"2019-04-09T09:20:13","modified_gmt":"2019-04-09T09:20:13","slug":"sc-dismisses-plea-seeking-stay-on-release-of-pm-modi-biopic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tehelka.com\/sc-dismisses-plea-seeking-stay-on-release-of-pm-modi-biopic\/","title":{"rendered":"SC dismisses plea seeking stay on release of PM Modi biopic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-311138 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/tehelka.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/PM-Modi-biopic-300x163.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"477\" height=\"259\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tehelka.com\/media\/2019\/04\/PM-Modi-biopic-300x163.jpg 300w, https:\/\/tehelka.com\/media\/2019\/04\/PM-Modi-biopic.jpg 616w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 477px) 100vw, 477px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The Supreme Court on Tuesday dismissed a plea seeking a stay on the release of movie \u2018PM Narendra Modi\u2019, a biopic on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying that it is for the Election Commission (EC) to decide whether the release of the movie on the date of elections can tilt the balance in favour of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), as alleged by the opposition Congress.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">A bench headed by Chief Justice of India\u00a0Ranjan Gogoi\u00a0said the plea is \u201cpremature\u201d as the movie was yet to be certified by the Censor Board.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">A bench also comprising Justices Deepak Gupta and Sanjiv Khanna said, \u201cwe, therefore, do not consider it fit to entertain the petition.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, representing\u00a0Congress spokesperson Aman Pawar had argued that the film violates the Model Code of Conduct and that most of the people associated with the movie were linked to the BJP\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cEC to take a call on whether the release of the movie and its screening on the date of elections can tilt the balance in favour of the BJP or can disturb the level-playing field,\u201d said the bench.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The film is scheduled to release on April 11, the first day of voting for the Lok Sabha elections.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Actor Vivek Oberoi, who plays PM Modi in the movie, tweeted after the court order:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cWith all your blessings, support and love, today we have won in the Honorable Supreme Court!
