\"\"<\/a>At least 49 people were dead in the two mass shootings at two mosques in the New Zealand city of Christchurch on March 15. According to New Zealand Police Commissioner Mike Bush, 20 people were seriously injured in the terror attack.<\/span><\/p>\n

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern describing the shooting as \u201cone of New Zealand\u2019s darkest days\u201d. Police, meanwhile, arrested four people, including one woman. The prime suspect of the attack has reportedly claimed responsibility for the shootings and said in a manifesto that he was a 28-year-old white Australian who came to New Zealand only to plan and train for the attack, an international news agency pointed out.<\/span><\/p>\n

At least one gunman who targeted crowded mosques in the New Zealand city of Christchurch killed a number of people, police said. The mosques were packed with worshippers gathering for Friday afternoon prayers on March 15, and members of the Bangladesh cricket team were arriving when the shooter opened fire.<\/span><\/p>\n

Local media reported at least nine people were dead and the South Island city was placed in lockdown as police hunted for an \u201cactive shooter.\u201d \u201cThis is an evolving incident and we are working to confirm the facts, however we can confirm there have been a number of fatalities,\u201d Bush was quoted as saying.<\/span><\/p>\n

He said one person was in custody but there may be other offenders and armed officers were attending a number of scenes. \u201cPolice are responding with its full capability to manage the situation, but the risk environment remains extremely high,\u201d Bush said Ardern said she was unable to confirm the number of fatalities, saying events were still unfolding. \u201cIt is clear that this is one of New Zealand\u2019s darkest days.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cClearly, what has happened here is an extraordinary and unprecedented act of violence.\u201d The Masjid al Noor in central Christchurch was filled with worshippers, when the attack happened, as was a second mosque in suburban Linwood.<\/span><\/p>\n

A Palestinian man in the mosque, who did not want to give his name, said he saw a man shot in the head. \u201cI heard three quick shots then after about 10 seconds it started again it must have been an automatic no one could pull a trigger that quick,\u201d he was quoted as saying. \u201cThen people started running out. Some were covered in blood.\u201d Another witness told stuff.co.nz he was praying in the Deans Ave mosque when he heard shooting and saw his wife lying dead on the footpath outside when he fled.<\/span><\/p>\n

Another man said he saw children being shot. \u201cThere were bodies all over me,\u201d he said. An eyewitness told Radio New Zealand he heard shots fired and four people were lying on the ground, with \u201cblood everywhere\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

Unconfirmed reports said the shooter was a wearing military-style clothing. Commissioner Bush said all schools in the city had been placed in lockdown in response to \u201ca serious ongoing firearms incident\u201d. \u201cPolice urge anyone in central Christchurch to stay off the streets,\u201d he said in a statement.<\/span><\/p>\n

Central city buildings, including the Civic Offices and Central Library, were also locked down. The city council offered a helpline for parents looking for kids attending a mass climate change rally nearby. \u201cPlease do not try and come and collect your children until police say it is safe for people to come into the central city,\u201d they said.<\/span><\/p>\n

There was no official information on casualties until the edition went to the press but a Bangladesh cricket team spokesman said none of the players were hurt. \u201cThey are safe. But they are mentally shocked. We have asked the team to stay confined in the hotel,\u201d he was quoted as saying by Agence France-Presse.<\/span><\/p>\n

He reportedly said the attack happened as some <\/span>of Bangladesh players disembarked from a team bus and were about to enter <\/span>the mosque. He said most of the players went to the mosque. He said Bangladesh cricket board is in contact with New Zealand cricket authorities and would take further decisions after consultation.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mass shootings are rare in New Zealand, which tightened its gun laws to restrict access to semi-automatic rifles in 1992, two years after a mentally disturbed man shot dead 13 people in the South Island town of Aramoana. However, anyone over 16 can apply for a standard firearms licence after doing a safety course, which allows them to purchase and use a shotgun unsupervised.<\/span><\/p>\n
