After the Prime Minister Narendra Modi\u00a0 launched an early-morning Twitter blitz on Wednesday calling\u00a0 on Bollywood and sports celebrities and others to urge people to vote in the country’s upcoming mammoth elections, former J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah asked him that he should let the people in his state also choose their government in a democratic way by\u00a0 holding assembly election in the state.<\/span><\/div>\n

“The right to choose an elected government, as opposed to being governed by a hand picked nominee of the central government, is the hallmark of the sort of democracy you are tweeting about. Please give us our democratic right to choose our own government,\u201d Omar posted on Twitter.<\/span><\/div>\n

Omar said the BJP government had \u201cconsciously\u201d disenfranchised the people of J&K by not holding Assembly elections simultaneously with the Parliament polls.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n

\u201cDear @narendramodi Sahib, it is good to see you appealing to famous people to increase voter turnout however at the same time your government has consciously disenfranchised people in J&K by not holding Assembly elections on time,\u201d Omar said in another tweet.<\/span><\/div>\n

The Election Commission of India has earlier\u00a0 decided not to hold Assembly polls in J&K citing the security reasons. Thr Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora made it clear that only Lok Sabha elections will be held in the state now. This despite the fact that all J&K political parties had unanimously batted for concurrent Assembly and Parliament polls in the state.
