{"id":308258,"date":"2019-01-17T11:54:55","date_gmt":"2019-01-17T11:54:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tehelka.com\/?p=308258"},"modified":"2019-01-17T11:54:55","modified_gmt":"2019-01-17T11:54:55","slug":"maharashtra-supreme-court-relaxes-norms-for-dance-bars","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tehelka.com\/maharashtra-supreme-court-relaxes-norms-for-dance-bars\/","title":{"rendered":"Maharashtra: Supreme Court relaxes norms for dance bars"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-308259 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/tehelka.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/dance-bar-300x161.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"580\" height=\"311\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tehelka.com\/media\/2019\/01\/dance-bar-300x161.jpg 300w, https:\/\/tehelka.com\/media\/2019\/01\/dance-bar.jpg 530w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The Supreme Court on Thursday set aside some provisions of a 2016 law imposing restrictions on the licensing and functioning of dance bars in Maharashtra.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The Top court relaxed stringent conditions set by Maharashtra government for getting licences for running dance bars and upheld the time of five and half hours for dance performances.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">A bench headed by Justice A K Sikri\u00a0said that there cannot be &#8220;total ban on dance bars.&#8221; No licence has been granted by Maharashtra government for a dance bar in Mumbai since 2005. &#8220;There may be regulations but that should not amount to total prohibition&#8221;,<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The apex court quashed the provision mandating that dance bars in Maharashtra should be a kilometre away from religious places and educational institutions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">It allowed the payment of tips to performers at dance bars but showering of currency notes cannot be allowed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">However, it also backed fixing the timing of dance bars in the state from 6 pm to 11.30 pm.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The Apex Court also quashed the provision of the 2016 law which mandated that there must be a partition between bar rooms and the dance floor.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Mandatory installation of CCTVs was also struck down by the court that said the rule violates privacy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Supreme Court on Thursday set aside some provisions of a 2016 law imposing restrictions on the licensing and functioning of dance bars in Maharashtra.
