The Lok Sabha on Tuesday passed a landmark bill to amend the constitution by providing 10 per cent reservation in public jobs and educational institutions to \u201ceconomically weaker\u201d sections in the General category.<\/span><\/p>\n

Narendra Modi government describe it as “historic” as most of the parties supported the bill.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe passage of The Constitution (One Hundred And Twenty-Fourth Amendment) Bill, 2019 in the Lok Sabha is a landmark moment in our nation\u2019s history. It sets into motion the process to achieve an effective measure that ensures justice for all sections of society,\u201d Modi tweeted.<\/span><\/p>\n

He thanked MPs and all the parties who supported the bill<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI thank MPs from all the parties who supported The Constitution (One Hundred And Twenty-Fourth Amendment) Bill, 2019 in the Lok Sabha. I also appreciate those MP colleagues who enriched today\u2019s debate with their views,\u201d Modi added.<\/span><\/p>\n

He further said, \u201cWe are resolutely committed to the principle of \u2018Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas.\u2019 It is our endeavour to ensure that every poor person, irrespective of caste or creed gets to lead a life of dignity, and gets access to all possible opportunities.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The bill was passed with 323 members voted in favour of the Constitution (124th Amendment) Bill 2019, and three voted against it. All parties supported the Bill, barring AIMIM, which opposed, and AIADMK, which walked out.\u00a0The debate went on for more than four and a half hours in Lok Sabha .<\/span><\/p>\n

The bill is expected\u00a0to benefit a huge section of upper castes including Brahmins, Marathas, Rajputs (Thakurs), Jats, Bhumihars, and several other communities.<\/span><\/p>\n

Prime Minister Modi and Congress president Rahul Gandhi were present in the House when the bill was passed.<\/span><\/p>\n

The bill will be tabled by government in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.\u00a0 The Union Cabinet had approved the bill on Monday.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
