The cause of deaths is due to the highest levels of exposure to ultrafine particulate matter, PM2.5, in Delhi in 2017 followed by Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Haryana and Rajasthan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The study reveals that outdoor pollution reduced the average life expectancy in the national capital by 1.5 years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The study, published in the Lancet Planetary Health journal said that Delhi recorded 12,322 deaths due to air pollution in 2017.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Around 12.4 lakh deaths in the country in 2017 is attributable to air pollution, the study said and termed air pollution a leading risk factor for deaths in the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The study said that 77 per cent of India&#8217;s population is exposed to outdoor air pollution levels above the National Ambient Air Quality Standards safe limit and among them, northern Indian states had particularly high outdoor air pollution levels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Expert Christopher Murray, Director, Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, said, \u201dAir pollution in India causes not just lung disease, but also is a substantial contributing factor in cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
