{"id":306635,"date":"2018-12-06T04:58:31","date_gmt":"2018-12-06T04:58:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tehelka.com\/?p=306635"},"modified":"2018-12-06T04:58:31","modified_gmt":"2018-12-06T04:58:31","slug":"agustawestland-deal-middleman-christian-michel-sent-to-5-days-cbi-custody","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tehelka.com\/agustawestland-deal-middleman-christian-michel-sent-to-5-days-cbi-custody\/","title":{"rendered":"AgustaWestland deal \u2018middleman\u2019 Christian Michel sent to 5 days CBI custody"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-306600 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/tehelka.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/christian-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"508\" height=\"286\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tehelka.com\/media\/2018\/12\/christian-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/tehelka.com\/media\/2018\/12\/christian.jpg 592w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 508px) 100vw, 508px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Christian Michel, the alleged middleman in Rs 3600 crore AgustaWestland chopper deal was on Wednesday sent to five-day custody of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) by a Delhi court.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Michel, a British national, was brought to India on late Tuesday night after the highest court in UAE paved the way for his extradition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The CBI had sought 14 days&#8217; custody of Michel, however, the agency was granted five days for interrogation to confront him with evidence and unearth the money trail in the scam.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Michel\u2019s extradition came through on a day Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj held discussions with her UAE counterpart Abdullah bin Zayed in Abu Dhabi.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">CBI said, Michel&#8217;s extradition took place &#8220;under the guidance&#8221; of National Security Advisor Ajit Doval. He was accompanied by a team of Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), CBI and Foreign Ministry officials.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">At an election rally in Rajasthan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi commented on Michel&#8217;s extradition and said, &#8220;You must have seen how the middleman in the VVIP chopper scam was caught and brought from Dubai to Delhi.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The AgustaWestland case involves the deal to purchase luxury helicopters for VIPs when Manmohan Singh\u2019s Congress-led coalition was in power.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Extradition proceedings were held before\u00a0UAE Court against Christian\u00a0Michel on the extradition request of CBI.
