{"id":306130,"date":"2018-11-26T11:38:11","date_gmt":"2018-11-26T11:38:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tehelka.com\/?p=306130"},"modified":"2018-11-26T11:38:11","modified_gmt":"2018-11-26T11:38:11","slug":"mhrd-issues-guidelines-to-all-states-uts-to-regulate-weight-of-school-bags","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tehelka.com\/mhrd-issues-guidelines-to-all-states-uts-to-regulate-weight-of-school-bags\/","title":{"rendered":"MHRD issues guidelines to all states, UTs to regulate weight of school bags"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-306131 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/tehelka.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/school-300x216.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"479\" height=\"345\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tehelka.com\/media\/2018\/11\/school-300x216.jpg 300w, https:\/\/tehelka.com\/media\/2018\/11\/school.jpg 696w, https:\/\/tehelka.com\/media\/2018\/11\/school-585x420.jpg 585w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 479px) 100vw, 479px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The Ministry of Human Resource and Development (MHRD)\u00a0has\u00a0instructed all States and Union Territories to formulate guidelines to regulate the teaching of subjects and weight of the school bag in accordance to the instructions of the Government of India.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The move is in line with a Madras High Court order that aimed at easing the burden on young school children who are forced to carry heavy school bags.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Senior NCERT official while confirming the development said, \u201cThe ministry guidelines are in adherence to the Madras High Court order on the weight of school bags.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">In June 2018, a PIL was filed in the Supra Court as well seeking a reduction in weight of school bags, citing health implications.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\u00a0<strong>Ministry guidelines:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\u00a0According to the norms, the weight of the bag for classes I and II should only be 1.5 kg.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The weight of the bag for classes 3 to 5 is 4 Kg.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The weight of the bag for classes 6 and 7 is 4.5 kg.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The weight of the bag for classes VIII to X should not exceed 5 kg.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The Ministry also asks schools not to assign any homework to students in classes 1 and 2.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">As per the guidelines, schools should not be allowed to prescribe anything other than NCERT textbooks in classes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The schools should not ask students to bring extra books or study material to school.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Ministry of Human Resource and Development (MHRD)\u00a0has\u00a0instructed all States and Union Territories to formulate guidelines to regulate the teaching of subjects and weight of the school bag in accordance to the instructions of the Government of India.
