{"id":305839,"date":"2018-11-20T07:56:16","date_gmt":"2018-11-20T07:56:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tehelka.com\/?p=305839"},"modified":"2018-11-20T07:56:16","modified_gmt":"2018-11-20T07:56:16","slug":"former-bihar-minister-manju-verma-surrenders-before-court","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tehelka.com\/former-bihar-minister-manju-verma-surrenders-before-court\/","title":{"rendered":"Former Bihar Minister Manju Verma surrenders before Court"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-301276 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/tehelka.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/manju-verma-300x260.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"423\" height=\"367\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tehelka.com\/media\/2018\/08\/manju-verma-300x260.jpg 300w, https:\/\/tehelka.com\/media\/2018\/08\/manju-verma-485x420.jpg 485w, https:\/\/tehelka.com\/media\/2018\/08\/manju-verma.jpg 495w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 423px) 100vw, 423px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Former Bihar minister\u00a0Manju Verma wanted in connection with the Muzaffarpur shelter home sexual abuse scandal surrendered before a court in Begusarai on Tuesday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Verma was on the run and evading arrest in the Arms Act case registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the Muzaffarpur shelter home case.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The Supreme Court on November 12 pulled up the Bihar Police for its failure to arrest Manju Verma.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The top court had summoned the Director General of Bihar Police to appear before it on November 27, if the police failed to arrest Manju Verma by then.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Manju Verma had resigned as the Social Welfare Minister of Bihar in August following the revelations that her husband Chandrakant Verma had alleged links with key accused Brajesh Thakur in the Muzaffarpur shelter home sex scandal case.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Over 40 girls were sexually assaulted at a shelter home, which was run by Brajesh Thakur\u2019s NGO at Bihar\u2019s Muzaffarpur.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">A non-bailable warrant was issued against Manju Verma on November 1 after Supreme Court rapped the Bihar government for not arresting her.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">In August, the police had raided Manju Verma\u2019s residence in connection with the shelter home rape case and recovered arms and ammunition.
