Prime minister Narendra Modi arrived in Singapore on Wednesday morning on a two-day visit.<\/span><\/p>\n

He met US vice president Mike Pence on the sidelines of the East Asia Summit and two leaders discussed bilateral relations, regional and international issues.<\/span><\/p>\n

Vice president Pence acknowledged that India had made progress economically and felt that India is a positive factor in regional and international relations, the foreign ministry said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Productive discussion on all aspects of global strategic partnership based on growing convergence of interests on regional and global issues,\u201d Ministry of External Affairs Raveesh Kumar tweeted.<\/span><\/p>\n

The meeting between Prime Minister Modii and Vice President Pence comes weeks after US president\u00a0Donald Trump turned down Modi’s invite to India’s Republic Day\u00a0as chief guest due to “scheduling constraints”.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Modi also met Prime Minister of Singapore, Lee Hsien Loong. Both leaders exchanged views on cooperation in financial technology, enhanced connectivity and regional economic integration.<\/span><\/p>\n

Modi began his day by attending the\u00a0Singapore Fintech Summit where he urged start-ups to invest in India. “I say this to all the fintech companies and start-ups, India is your best destination,” he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Prime Minister Modi is the first head of government to deliver the keynote address at the event, one of the largest events on financial technology.<\/span><\/p>\n

Modi will also attend the 13th East Asia Summit (EAS) hosted by Singapore as the current chair of ASEAN grouping.<\/span><\/p>\n

As strategic partners, India and ASEAN enjoy close trade and economic relations.<\/span><\/p>\n

Trade between India and ASEAN stood at $\u00a081.33 billion in 2017-18 and constitutes 10.58 per cent of India’s total trade. Exports to member nations\u00a0constitute 11.28 per cent of India’s total exports.<\/span><\/p>\n

Before leaving for Singapore, Prime Minister Modi had said in New Delhi that his participation in the ASEAN-India and East Asia summits symbolised India’s “continued commitment” to strengthen its engagement with ASEAN members and with the wider Indo-Pacific region.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
