{"id":305488,"date":"2018-11-13T09:42:22","date_gmt":"2018-11-13T09:42:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tehelka.com\/?p=305488"},"modified":"2018-11-13T09:42:22","modified_gmt":"2018-11-13T09:42:22","slug":"supreme-court-to-hear-zakia-jafri-plea-on-november-19-in-gujarat-riots-case","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tehelka.com\/supreme-court-to-hear-zakia-jafri-plea-on-november-19-in-gujarat-riots-case\/","title":{"rendered":"Supreme Court to hear Zakia Jafri plea on November 19 in Gujarat riots case"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-299371 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/tehelka.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Supreme-Court-1-300x175.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"430\" height=\"251\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tehelka.com\/media\/2018\/06\/Supreme-Court-1-300x175.jpg 300w, https:\/\/tehelka.com\/media\/2018\/06\/Supreme-Court-1.jpg 636w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 430px) 100vw, 430px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The Supreme Court will hear on November 19, Zakia Jafri\u2019s plea challenging the clean chit to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and others in the 2002 Gujarat riots case.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Last year, the Gujarat High Court had rejected the petition that alleges a &#8220;larger conspiracy&#8221; in the riots and had upheld Special Investigation Team&#8217;s (SIT) clean chit to top politicians including Modi, who was then chief minister of Gujarat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">In 2012, the report of the Supreme Court monitored SIT had concluded that Chief Minister Narendra Modi took all possible steps to control the riots.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The petition filed by Zakia Jafri and the NGO Citizen for Justice and Peace, run by Teesta Setalvad had challenged the findings of the Supreme Court-appointed SIT and the ruling of a magistrate court that upheld its closure report of 2012.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Zakia Jafri is the widow of former Congress MP Ehsan Jafri, who was among those people massacred at\u00a0Gulbarg Society\u00a0in Ahmedabad on February 28, 2002 in the aftermath of the Godhra train carnage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Zakia\u2019s allegations were investigated by the SIT appointed by the Supreme Court in March 2008.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The top court in April 2009 had asked SIT to look into Zakia\u2019s complaint.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The SIT examined Modi, the then Gujarat chief minister and a year later, submitted a closure report that underlined that there was no \u201cprosecutable evidence\u201d against him.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Supreme Court will hear on November 19, Zakia Jafri\u2019s plea challenging the clean chit to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and others in the 2002 Gujarat riots case.
