Khan, an anti-corruption commission prosecutor, reportedly said, \u201cThe High Court has upheld the lower court verdict and raised the jail sentence from original five years to 10 years.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">High Court bench comprising of Justice Enayetur Rahim and Justice Mostafizur Rahman announced the verdict after accepting the Anti-Corruption Commission\u2019s review petition to increase Zia\u2019s imprisonment in the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case from five to 10 years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Zia still leads the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, the main Opposition party from behind the bars.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Attorney General Mahbubey Alam reportedly said, \u201cShe cannot contest the elections unless the conviction is set aside by a higher court.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Bangladesh court on October 30 doubled a jail term for imprisoned Khaleda Zia, the Opposition leader and former prime minister, from 5 to 10 years following a prosecution appeal.
