{"id":302329,"date":"2018-09-06T15:51:15","date_gmt":"2018-09-06T15:51:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tehelka.com\/?p=302329"},"modified":"2018-09-06T15:51:15","modified_gmt":"2018-09-06T15:51:15","slug":"rajiv-gandhi-assassination-case-sc-asks-tamil-nadu-governor-to-consider-mercy-petition-of-convicts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tehelka.com\/rajiv-gandhi-assassination-case-sc-asks-tamil-nadu-governor-to-consider-mercy-petition-of-convicts\/","title":{"rendered":"Rajiv Gandhi assassination case: SC asks Tamil Nadu governor to consider mercy petition of convicts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-299685 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/tehelka.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Supreme-Court-2-300x175.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"641\" height=\"374\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tehelka.com\/media\/2018\/06\/Supreme-Court-2-300x175.jpg 300w, https:\/\/tehelka.com\/media\/2018\/06\/Supreme-Court-2.jpg 636w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 641px) 100vw, 641px\" \/>The Supreme Court on September 6 asked the Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit to consider the mercy petition of AG Perarivalan and the six other convicts in the 1991 Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The two-judge bench of the apex court, headed by Justice Ranjan Gogoi, disposed of the petition filed by the Centre on Tamil Nadu government&#8217;s proposal seeking an early release of the convicts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Centre had stated that the release of the convicts in the assassination case of a high profile leader will set dangerous precedent and have international ramification.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The mercy petition was filed by 47-year-old Perarivalan alias Arivu before the Tamil Nadu Governor on December 30, 2015 under Article 161 of the Constitution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The Tamil Nadu government seems to continue with its decision to ensure the release of the convicts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">While continuing with the decision of state to ensure the release of convicts Fisheries Minister D Jayakumar said, &#8220;We have already taken decision when Jayalalithaa was CM and unanimous resolution was passed. We are waiting for the order from Supreme Court. Let&#8217;s receive the copy and we&#8217;ll decide. Our stand is what Amma had taken.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Perarivalan claimed that the probe was not full-fledged and was incomplete and partial.\u00a0 He added, \u201cThe main culprits who designed the bomb made of RDX were not nabbed till date. They are scot-free and investigation is still pending into the vital aspects of the crime itself,\u201d his letter to the governor reads.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Perarivalan had already spent more than 24 years in jail.
