{"id":302224,"date":"2018-09-04T07:35:27","date_gmt":"2018-09-04T07:35:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tehelka.com\/?p=302224"},"modified":"2018-09-04T07:35:27","modified_gmt":"2018-09-04T07:35:27","slug":"cji-dipak-misra-recommends-ranjan-gogoi-as-successor-and-next-chief-justice-of-india","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tehelka.com\/cji-dipak-misra-recommends-ranjan-gogoi-as-successor-and-next-chief-justice-of-india\/","title":{"rendered":"CJI Dipak Misra recommends Ranjan Gogoi as successor and next Chief Justice of India"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-302225 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/tehelka.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/dipakgogoi-300x176.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"687\" height=\"403\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tehelka.com\/media\/2018\/09\/dipakgogoi-300x176.jpg 300w, https:\/\/tehelka.com\/media\/2018\/09\/dipakgogoi-768x451.jpg 768w, https:\/\/tehelka.com\/media\/2018\/09\/dipakgogoi-696x409.jpg 696w, https:\/\/tehelka.com\/media\/2018\/09\/dipakgogoi-715x420.jpg 715w, https:\/\/tehelka.com\/media\/2018\/09\/dipakgogoi.jpg 883w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 687px) 100vw, 687px\" \/>Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra on Tuesday sent a letter to the Central government recommending Justice Ranjan Gogoi as his successor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The Union law minister, earlier this week had set in motion the process of appointing the new Chief Justice of India by requesting Justice Misra to name his successor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The law minister, after receipt of the recommendation of the CJI puts it before the Prime Minister who advises the President in the matter of appointment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">If the recommendation is cleared by the Central government, Justice Gogoi will be administered the oath of office by President Ram Nath Kovind on October 3\u00a0as the next Chief Justice of India.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Chief Justice Mishra is retiring on October 2, but the day being a national holiday, October 1 will be his last working day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Justice Gogoi was among the four judges who, in January, held and\u00a0unprecedented press conference raising concerns about administration in the apex court, saying it was \u201cnot in order\u201d. The other three judges were \u2013 Justice MB Lokur, Justice J Chelameswar (now retired) and Justice Kurian Joseph.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Justice Gogoi was born in 1954. On February 28, 2001, he was appointed as a permanent Judge of Gauhati High Court.
