{"id":301278,"date":"2018-08-08T15:17:22","date_gmt":"2018-08-08T15:17:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tehelka.com\/?p=301278"},"modified":"2018-08-08T15:17:22","modified_gmt":"2018-08-08T15:17:22","slug":"supreme-court-to-constitute-committee-to-look-into-issues-in-jails-across-country","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tehelka.com\/supreme-court-to-constitute-committee-to-look-into-issues-in-jails-across-country\/","title":{"rendered":"Supreme Court to constitute committee to look into issues in jails across country"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-299685 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/tehelka.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Supreme-Court-2-300x175.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"669\" height=\"390\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tehelka.com\/media\/2018\/06\/Supreme-Court-2-300x175.jpg 300w, https:\/\/tehelka.com\/media\/2018\/06\/Supreme-Court-2.jpg 636w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 669px) 100vw, 669px\" \/>The Supreme Court on August 8 ordered the constitution of a committee under the chairmanship of its retired judge to look into issues and problems in jails, including overcrowding and also suggest steps to deal with the same.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The SC said that the committee for prison reforms will also have two or three government officers, who will coordinate with the retired judge and look into the issues, and also apprise the SC regarding suggestions to improve the lifestyle of inmates staying in overcrowded jails.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">A three-judge bench comprising of Justice Madan Bhimrao Lokur, S Abdul Nazeer and Deepak Gupta observed that the committee will also deal with issues, including that of women prisoners languishing in jails across the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The bench has fixed the matter for hearing on\u00a0<span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_167397114\"><span class=\"aQJ\">August 17<\/span><\/span>. The bench also expressed its displeasure that the government has collected a huge amount under the orders of the apex court but the funds are not being utilized adequately.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Attorney General (AG) K K Venugopal, representing the Central government, told the court, &#8220;We have multiple problems. Finance is one of the major hurdles. We are trying to overcome this.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">On replying to attorney general&#8217;s comment Justice Lokur said, &#8220;We (court) are also trying our best to solve problems.
