{"id":300291,"date":"2018-07-11T15:02:28","date_gmt":"2018-07-11T15:02:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tehelka.com\/?p=300291"},"modified":"2018-07-11T15:02:28","modified_gmt":"2018-07-11T15:02:28","slug":"supreme-court-slams-authorities-for-not-taking-steps-to-control-delhi-groundwater-depletion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tehelka.com\/supreme-court-slams-authorities-for-not-taking-steps-to-control-delhi-groundwater-depletion\/","title":{"rendered":"Supreme Court slams authorities for not taking steps to control Delhi groundwater depletion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-299685 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/tehelka.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Supreme-Court-2-300x175.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"365\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tehelka.com\/media\/2018\/06\/Supreme-Court-2-300x175.jpg 300w, https:\/\/tehelka.com\/media\/2018\/06\/Supreme-Court-2.jpg 636w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 625px) 100vw, 625px\" \/><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Supreme Court slammed the Centre, the Delhi government and their civic bodies on Wednesday for not taking any step to tackle the &#8220;serious problem&#8221; of groundwater depletion in the national capital.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The apex court perused the NITI Aayog&#8217;s report which said that various authorities were passing the buck and shying away from their responsibility.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">&#8220;You are doing nothing to reduce water consumption, there is no plan for recharge and preservation of groundwater,&#8221; a bench of Justices Madan B Lokur and Deepak Gupta said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The centre was questioned by the court for immediate, intermediary and long term measure in checking the depletion of Delhi\u2019s groundwater.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">On May 8, The Apex court had expressed its concern about &#8216;over-exploitation\u201d of ground water in various parts of Delhi and asked the authorities to avoid a crisis, saying the situation was &#8220;semi-critical&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">It had examined a report filed by the Central Ground Water Board (CGWB) on the status of groundwater level in Delhi from May 2000 till May 2017 and said it indicated an &#8220;extremely sad state of affairs&#8221; and the situation was serious.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The issue of depletion of ground water came in notice when the court was hearing a matter relating to sealing of unauthorised constructions in Delhi.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Supreme Court slammed the Centre, the Delhi government and their civic bodies on Wednesday for not taking any step to tackle the &#8220;serious problem&#8221; of groundwater depletion in the national capital.
