{"id":300209,"date":"2018-07-09T11:13:31","date_gmt":"2018-07-09T11:13:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tehelka.com\/?p=300209"},"modified":"2018-07-09T11:13:31","modified_gmt":"2018-07-09T11:13:31","slug":"nirbhaya-case-verdict-sc-upholds-death-penalty-of-3-rapists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tehelka.com\/nirbhaya-case-verdict-sc-upholds-death-penalty-of-3-rapists\/","title":{"rendered":"\u00a0Nirbhaya\u00a0Case Verdict: SC upholds death penalty of 3 rapists"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The Supreme Court on July 9 dismissed the review pleas filed by three of the four convicts in the Nirbhaya gang rape and murder case and upheld the death penalty awarded to them in the sensational December 16, 2012 Nirbhaya gangrape and murder case.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">&#8220;I am very happy with the judgement,&#8221; said Asha Devi, the mother of the 2012 Delhi gang-rape victim.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">A three-judge bench, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra and comprising Justice Ashok Bhushan and R Bhanumathi, pronounced the verdict.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The petition filed by three death row convicts- Mukesh Singh, Vinay Sharma and Pawan Gupta- was against the Supreme Court order of May 2017, which said that Nirbhaya&#8217;s rapists and killers should be hanged.
