{"id":286198,"date":"2018-04-11T10:28:46","date_gmt":"2018-04-11T04:58:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.tehelka.com\/?p=286198"},"modified":"2018-04-11T10:28:46","modified_gmt":"2018-04-11T04:58:46","slug":"bjps-income-doubles-to-rs-1034-crore-making-it-richest-party","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tehelka.com\/bjps-income-doubles-to-rs-1034-crore-making-it-richest-party\/","title":{"rendered":"BJP\u2019s income doubles to Rs 1,034 crore, making it richest party"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tehelka.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Modi.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-278311 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.tehelka.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Modi-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Modi\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" data-id=\"278311\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\">The income of the ruling BJP soared 81% to more than Rs 1,034 crore in 2016-17 from Rs 570 crore in 2015-16, the latest annual audit reports filed with the Election Commission suggested, adding that seven national parties declared a total income of \u20b91,559.17 crore in 2016-17.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\">\u201cThis forms 66.34% of the total income of national parties added together during 2016-17,\u201d a report by Delhi-based think-tank Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) has pointed out.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\">The Indian National Congress followed with \u20b9225.36 crore \u2014 14.45% of the total income, it said, adding that the CPI has declared the lowest income of \u20b92.08 crore which forms a mere 0.13%, PTI quoted the report as saying.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\">The data has been compiled from Income Tax returns filed by the parties across the country. The seven national parties declared a total expenditure of \u20b91,228.26 crore, the report added.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\">The BJP declared the maximum expenditure of \u20b9710.05 crore in 2016-17, while the Congress incurred a total expense of \u20b9321.66 crore (\u20b996.30 crore more than its total income), media reports said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\">The report further said that 70% of the total income of the BSP, 31% of the total income of the BJP and the CPI and 6% of the total income of the CPI(M) was declared unspent during 2016-17.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\">The BSP\u2019s total income was \u20b9173.58 crore during 2016-17, while its total expenditure was \u20b951.83 crore. Between 2015-16 and 2016-17, the income of the BJP increased by 81.18% from \u20b9570.86 crore to \u20b91,034.27 crore, while that of the Congress decreased by 14% from \u20b9261.56 crore to \u20b9225.36 crore.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\">Income of the BSP increased by 266.32% from \u20b947.38 crore during 2015-16 to \u20b9173.58 crore in 2016-17, while that of the NCP increased by 88.63% from \u20b99.137 crore during 2015-16 to \u20b917.235 crore in 2016-17, it was pointed out.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\">The report noted that between 2015-16 and 2016-17, the income of the All India Trinamool Congress decreased by 81.52% and that of the CPI(M) fell by 6.72%.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\">The BJP and the Congress have declared donations\/contributions as one of their three main sources of income. \u201cGrants\/donations\/contributions of \u20b9997.12 crore declared by BJP formed 96.41% of the total income of the party during 2016-17. Declaration of \u20b9115.64 crore under revenue from the issuance of coupons by INC forms the topmost income of the party, contributing 51.32% of the total income of the party during 2016-17,\u201d ADR reportedly said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\">The maximum expenditure for the BJP during 2016-17 was towards election\/general propaganda, which amounted to \u20b9606.64 crore followed by expenses towards administrative cost at \u20b969.78 crore. The Congress spent the maximum \u20b9149.65 crore on election expenditure followed by the expenditure of \u20b9115.65 crore on administrative and general expenses, the report said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seven national parties have collected maximum 74.98% (\u20b91,169.07 crore) income from voluntary contributions for 2016-17. During 2016-17, national parties received \u20b9128.60 crore income from interest from banks and FD.
