Putin has been president since 2000, stepping aside for one term as prime minister to get around term limits.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\">The results represented record support for Putin, who barely campaigned before\u00a0<span data-term=\"goog_2001391359\">Sunday\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0vote and faced no real competition in an election that even some of his seven rival candidates described as a farce.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\">\u201cThank you very much. Together, we\u2019ll take on a great task in the name of Russia,\u201d Putin reportedly said to a crowd of flag-waving supporters at a rally near Moscow\u2019s Red Square on Sunday evening. \u201cSuccess awaits us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\">Putin is likely to continue with little change in terms of trying to rebuild Russia as a global power while limiting economic reforms at home. Given his lame-duck status, many expect the fight will now begin in earnest among the Kremlin elite to choose his successor.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\">The Russian leader rules unchallenged at home even as the economy stagnates after the longest recession in two decades.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\">Abroad, he faces spiraling conflict after the UK directly accused Putin of ordering the poisoning of former double agent Sergei Skripal earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\">Putin has defied US and EU sanctions over his 2014 annexation of Crimea and diplomatic pressure over Russia\u2019s support for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
