A visual documentation of 40 leading theatre productions over a span of two decades has formulated into <em>Theatrescapes<\/em>. The book is a collection of more than 200 photographs by Singh, encapsulating the intricate emotions of the stage and its open spaces.<br \/>\nCurator Alka Pande has shaped thematically the multiplicity of superlative emotions in Singh\u2019s pictures through the concept of <em>navarasas<\/em> from the <em>Natyashastra<\/em>, an ancient Indian treatise of performing arts. These nine <em>rasas<\/em> \u2014 <em>shringara<\/em> (erotic), <em>hasya<\/em> (comic), <em>karuna<\/em> (pathetic), <em>raudra<\/em> (furious), <em>veera<\/em> (heroic), <em>bhayanaka<\/em> (terrible), <em>bibhatsa<\/em> (odious), <em>adbhuta<\/em> (marvellous) and <em>shanta<\/em> (peace) \u2014 are the premise of all human emotions and play out the ever-changing hues of the stage.<br \/>\nSingh\u2019s lens captures some of the most iconic moments in Indian theatre, including productions of Habib Tanvir, Ebrahim Alkazi, Ratan Thiyam, Heisnam Kanhailal, Amal Allana, Usha Ganguli, Neelam Mansingh Chowdhry, Naseeruddin Shah, Alyque Padamsee and Lillette Dubey.<br \/>\n\u201cThere is sensuality, exuberance and energy, as a series of transitory emotional expressions communicated by the actor unfold in all their ethereality,\u201d says Amal Allana, noted theatre director and the daughter of Ebrahim Alkazi. \u201cShobha\u2019s love and knowledge of Indian classical dance and music undoubtedly allowed her to respond to this form of theatrical expression with greater familiarity and ease.\u201d<br \/>\nMaking rehearsals and performances a subject of her photography, Shobha has managed to capture brilliant frames with precision and awareness, sometimes treading on territories that were not always welcoming.
