‘Reservation Hatao’ Campaign Gains Traction on Social Media, Sparks Fresh Debate

New Delhi: A campaign carrying the slogan “Reservation Hatao” (Remove Reservation) has gained significant traction across social media platforms over the past few days, with videos, hashtags, and public appeals drawing widespread attention online.

Several users have shared videos of demonstrations and discussions demanding a review or removal of India’s reservation policy, arguing that admissions and government recruitment should be based solely on merit. Supporters of the campaign say the existing reservation system should be reconsidered in light of changing social and economic realities.

At the same time, many political leaders, social organisations, and constitutional experts have opposed the campaign, maintaining that reservation remains an important constitutional mechanism for promoting social justice and ensuring representation for historically disadvantaged communities.

The online debate has generated millions of views and thousands of comments, making it one of the most discussed public policy issues on Indian social media. However, there is no official indication that the Union Government is considering any proposal to abolish the reservation system, nor has any nationwide policy announcement been made.

India’s reservation framework is provided for under the Constitution and covers Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), Other Backward Classes (OBC), and Economically Weaker Sections (EWS). Any major change to the policy would require legal and constitutional processes.
