RBI Deputy Governor Viral Acharya resigns months before term ends

Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Deputy Governor Viral Acharya, has resigned from his post, six months before the scheduled end of his term, sources said on Monday.

Acharya’s reported exit came six months after Governor Urjit Patel stepped down from his position nearly nine months before the end of his schedule term.

Patel resigned as governor in December 2018 amid growing differences with the government.

Acharya had joined the central bank in January 2017 after Urjit Patel was promoted to be the governor.  

According to the sources, Acharya will be returning to New York University, sources said.

Now, the RBI is left with three deputy governors N S Vishwanathan, B P Kanungo and Mahesh Kumar Jain.
