Former Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh passed away on Saturday after battling an illness. He was 64.
He died in a Singapore hospital, where he had undergone a second kidney transplant. He was undergoing treatment at a hospital for several months, sources said.
The Rajya Sabha MP had undergone a kidney transplant in 2011.
He is survived by wife and twin daughters.
Several leaders tweeted their condolences.
President Ram Nath Kovind said Amar Singh was an able parliamentarian.
“Sad to hear of the demise of senior leader and Rajya Sabha MP, Shri Amar Singh. A man of many parts, Singh was an able parliamentarian. Condolences to his family, friends and well-wishers,” Kovind tweeted.
PM Modi in a tweet said, “Amar Singh Ji was an energetic public figure. In the last few decades, he witnessed some of the major political developments from close quarters. He was known for his friendships across many spheres of life. Saddened by his demise. Condolences to his friends & family. Om Shanti.”
Punjab CM Capt Amarinder Singh tweeted his condolences and said, “Saddened to learn of Amar Singh Ji’s demise. My heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and well-wishers. May his soul rest in peace.”
“I am saddened to hear about the sad demise of Amar Singh ji. My condolences to his family and loved ones,” tweeted Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.
