New Delhi: Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Tuesday led a protest march towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence in New Delhi, demanding his resignation over the police action against students during the recent CJP protest. Several senior Congress leaders, including party president Mallikarjun Kharge and chief ministers from Congress-ruled states, joined the demonstration.
The protest began from the Congress headquarters and moved towards Lok Kalyan Marg, where police had deployed heavy barricades and security personnel. As protesters attempted to march towards the Prime Minister’s residence, Delhi Police stopped them, leading to a brief standoff. Rahul Gandhi and several other Congress leaders were detained and later taken away by police. Videos shared by the party showed security personnel dragging Rahul Gandhi during the protest.
Addressing party workers before the march, Rahul Gandhi accused the Narendra Modi government of suppressing the voices of students and young people. He alleged that peaceful protesters were met with excessive police force and said the Congress would continue to stand with students demanding accountability. Priyanka Gandhi also criticised the government’s handling of the protest, calling it an attack on democratic rights.
The Congress demanded Prime Minister Modi’s resignation, alleging that the government had failed to protect students and was attempting to silence dissent through police action. Party leaders raised slogans against the Centre and held placards condemning the alleged crackdown on demonstrators.
Delhi Police maintained that security arrangements around the Prime Minister’s residence were in place to ensure law and order and prevent unauthorized gatherings in the high-security zone. The protest comes a day after clashes between police and CJP protesters during the ‘Chalo Sansad’ march, an incident that has triggered widespread political reactions across the country.
