Congress president Rahul Gandhi will contest the upcoming Lok Sabha polls from Wayanad Kerala apart from Amethi in Uttar Pradesh.
Senior party Leader AK Antony made the announcement on Sunday saying Gandhi has finally given his consent to fight from Wayanad.
Congress party tweeted, “In addition to Amethi, UP, Congress President @RahulGandhi will also be contesting from Wayanad, Kerala, for the Lok Sabha 2019 elections.”
Congress’ chief spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala said Gandhi was requested to contest from three southern states — Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. By representing Wayanad – which borders Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, he would be able to represent the other states as well.
“Rahul has respected the sentiments of the thousands of workers from south India by accepting to contest from Wayanad in Kerala,” Surjewala added.
Wayanad will vote on April 23 and Amethi on May 6. The counting of votes for the country will take place on May 23.
This is the first time Rahul will contest from a seat other than Amethi in Uttar Pradesh.
