Speculation over the upcoming Union Cabinet expansion has intensified, with Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha emerging as one of the strongest contenders for a ministerial berth. If the BJP goes ahead with his induction, the move could significantly reshape Punjab’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.
According to political sources, Chadha is among the frontrunners being considered by the BJP, along with Lovely Professional University (LPU) Chancellor Ashok Kumar Mittal and newly nominated Rajya Sabha MP Tarun Chugh. While there has been no official confirmation from the party or the government, a Cabinet reshuffle is widely expected in the coming days.
The possible inclusion of Chadha carries political significance beyond a routine Cabinet expansion. Once one of the Aam Aadmi Party’s most prominent faces in Punjab, Chadha played a pivotal organisational role during the party’s successful 2022 Assembly election campaign and was widely regarded as one of AAP’s key strategists in the state.
However, his political trajectory changed after differences reportedly emerged within the party leadership. Following his exit from AAP and subsequent entry into the BJP, Chadha is believed to have influenced several former AAP leaders to switch allegiance, further strengthening the BJP’s position in Punjab.
For the BJP, Chadha’s value extends beyond symbolism. As a former senior AAP leader, he is familiar with the party’s organisational structure, campaign machinery and voter outreach strategy. Political observers believe his experience could make him one of the BJP’s most effective voices against the Bhagwant Mann-led government as the party gears up for the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections.
His urban appeal is also expected to help the BJP expand its footprint in key cities such as Ludhiana, Jalandhar and Amritsar, where the party has long sought to strengthen its support among business communities and middle-class voters.
The Cabinet buzz comes at a time when Punjab’s representation in the Union Council of Ministers could undergo changes. Union Minister of State Ravneet Singh Bittu’s Rajya Sabha term ended on June 21, and unless he secures re-election within the stipulated six-month period, his ministerial position could fall vacant, potentially creating space for a new representative from Punjab. Though he can continue for six months even without his being a member of either House.
With the expected Cabinet expansion drawing closer, all eyes are on the BJP’s final decision. If Chadha is inducted, it could mark one of the party’s most significant political moves in Punjab ahead of the crucial 2027 Assembly elections, while dealing a fresh setback to the Aam Aadmi Party in the state.
