Punjab: 7 Nihangs arrested for attacking police and chopping off cop’s hand during curfew

Amidst the lock down, shocking news has come from Patiala in Punjab where Nihangs  on Sunday morning attacked policemen on duty and cut off the hand of an ASI when they were asked for a curfew pass. Police has arrested 7 Nihangs related to this incident.

Punjab Police DGP Dinkar Gupta in a tweet said, “In an unfortunate incident today morning, a group of Nihangs injured a few Police officers and a Mandi Board official at Sabzi Mandi, Patiala. ASI Harjeet Singh whose hand got cut-off has reached PGI Chandigarh. I have spoken to Director PGI who has deputed top Plastic surgeons of PGI for surgery, which just started.”

Many policemen and Mandi Board officials have been injured in this attack. According to the police, these Nihangs were asked to show the (curfew) pass but they hit the barricades from their car. After this, the Nihangs attacked the policemen on duty. The Nihangs fled the scene after the attack but were arrested later.

According to Punjab Chief Secretary KBS Sidhu, “7 Nihangs have been arrested from the Gurdwara in village Balbera. One of these was injured in the police firing and has been rushed to hospital. The operation was supervised by IG Patiala Zone, Jatinder Singh Aulakh.”

Shiromani Akali Dal leader Manjinder Singh Sirsa strongly condemned the incident. He said that the incident should not be associated with any particular religion and strict action should be taken against the perpetrators.
