The honor recognizes Dharmendra’s decades-long contribution to Indian cinema and his lasting cultural impact. Passing away in November 2025, the legendary star—fondly remembered as the “He-Man” of Bollywood—was cited on the official Padma Awards website as “one of the most versatile and successful actors in the history of the Hindi film industry,” leaving behind an indelible legacy spanning over 300 films. He was previously awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2012.

The civil investiture ceremony, held at the Ganatantra Mandap, was attended by top dignitaries, including Vice President CP Radhakrishnan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
The ceremony also celebrated several other stalwarts from the world of art and cinema. Legendary Malayalam actor Mammootty and ace playback singer Alka Yagnik personally accepted their Padma Bhushan awards. Meanwhile, Nita Pandey received the Padma Bhushan posthumously on behalf of her late husband, advertising icon Piyush Pandey.
Additionally, actors Prosenjit Chatterjee, Satish Shah, Murali Mohan, and Rajendra Prasad were conferred with the Padma Shri. Actor R. Madhavan was also named a Padma Shri recipient but was not present at the event.
The annual Padma Awards honor exceptional and distinguished contributions across various fields, including art, social work, public affairs, sports, and literature. For the year 2026, the government announced a total of 131 national honors on Republic Day, comprising five Padma Vibhushans, 13 Padma Bhushans, and 113 Padma Shris.
During Monday’s first-round ceremony, President Murmu presented two Padma Vibhushans, six Padma Bhushans, and 58 Padma Shri awards. The remaining recipients will be honored in a second ceremony to be held at a later date.
