Haryana: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday flagged off India’s first hydrogen-powered train from Jind, Haryana, marking a major milestone in the country’s push for clean and sustainable transportation. During his visit, the Prime Minister also inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for development projects worth over ₹14,700 crore across the state.
The hydrogen-powered train will operate on the Jind–Sonipat route and has been developed using indigenous technology under the ‘Make in India’ initiative. Powered by hydrogen fuel cells, the train emits only water vapour, making it an eco-friendly alternative to diesel-powered trains. India has now joined a select group of countries operating hydrogen-powered rail services.
According to officials, the train consists of two hydrogen-powered driving coaches and eight passenger coaches, with a passenger capacity of around 2,600 people. It is supported by a dedicated hydrogen production, storage and refuelling facility at Jind, designed to evaluate the future expansion of hydrogen-based rail transport in India.
Besides launching the train, Prime Minister Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for multiple infrastructure projects related to railways, roads, urban development, water supply and public services, collectively valued at more than ₹14,700 crore. The projects are aimed at improving connectivity, boosting economic growth and strengthening public infrastructure in Haryana.
Addressing the gathering, the Prime Minister highlighted India’s commitment to green mobility and clean energy, stating that the hydrogen train represents a significant step towards achieving sustainable development and reducing carbon emissions in the transport sector.
