Speculations after PM attends Pawar’s granddaughter’s reception

PM Narendra Modi and HM Amit Shah’s presence at Sharad Pawar’s granddaughter’s Delhi reception has sparked speculation over NCP’s stand on the proposed constitutional bill in the Lok Sabha.

The wedding reception of Revati Sule, granddaughter of veteran politician Sharad Pawar, was held in New Delhi on 10 August 2026. Among the most prominent guests at the reception were Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

Their presence has immediately created a buzz in national politics. The big question being asked now is whether the NCP could support the proposed constitutional bill in the Lok Sabha.

Revati Sule is the daughter of Supriya Sule and the granddaughter of Sharad Pawar. She married Sarang Lakhanee, a Nagpur-based businessman. The wedding took place on Saturday, 21 June 2026, in Mumbai. A large number of politicians, businessmen and Bollywood personalities attended the Mumbai wedding. However, the Delhi reception has acquired greater political significance because of the presence of Prime Minister Modi and Amit Shah.

Another significant detail is that Revati Sule has married into the Lakhanee family, with Sarang Lakhanee being the son of BJP leader Arun Lakhanee.

The presence of Modi and Pawar at the reception assumes added significance because the two leaders had met recently in Parliament on 22 July 2026, during the Monsoon Session. They had also previously shared a stage at the Lokmanya Tilak Award ceremony in Pune.

On Monday, 10 August, NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar led a delegation of the party’s eight Lok Sabha members to meet Prime Minister Modi. The meeting came at a time when the Modi government was making efforts to secure the support of non-Congress Opposition parties for the proposed delimitation bill.

This was the second meeting between Pawar and Modi in recent weeks. Pawar and Supriya Sule had met the Prime Minister last month as well. That meeting had triggered speculation that the Opposition party could be moving closer to the ruling side.

However, within the NCP itself, there are two different views and two different groups. The NCP has already been divided into two political formations—the NCP (SP), led by Sharad Pawar, and the NCP faction led by Ajit Pawar, which is part of the NDA.

Supriya Sule has maintained that the party must first see the actual contents of the proposed bill before taking a position. She said, “First we should get the bill. Without knowing the content, how can we take our position? If the Centre increases 50% of the seats and gives all the states equality, then we can consider supporting it. The final decision will be taken after discussing it with the INDIA bloc.”

However, Rohit Pawar has opposed the proposal.

The BJP, meanwhile, does not appear keen to bring the bill before the House without first ensuring that it has the necessary numbers. In the Rajya Sabha, the BJP’s strength is lower, and its position is even weaker in comparison with the broader strength of the Opposition.

The Lok Sabha has a total sanctioned strength of 543 seats. With three seats currently vacant, the effective strength has come down to 540. A two-thirds majority would therefore require 360 votes.

At present, the NDA’s strength is 293, including 240 BJP MPs, 16 from the TDP, 12 from the JD(U), five from the Shiv Sena, and five from the LJP (Ram Vilas).

The breakaway TMC group, consisting of around 20 MPs, could potentially support the bill. On the other side, the DMK has 22 seats and remains opposed to the BJP. However, political equations in Tamil Nadu have also become complicated. The Tamil Nadu government and the Congress have now come together, creating differences between the DMK and the Congress.

Stalin’s son was recently arrested by the Central government and subsequently released, adding another layer to the existing political tension.

In this changing political equation, the role of Sharad Pawar could become extremely important.

But for the moment, his position remains uncertain.

The presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Amit Shah at his granddaughter’s wedding reception, followed by their recent meetings with Pawar and Supriya Sule, has naturally fuelled fresh speculation in national politics.

Whether these meetings are simply social and political courtesies or indicate a larger political understanding will become clearer only when the proposed bill comes before Parliament.

For now, Pawar’s role remains one of the most closely watched and uncertain factors in the evolving political arithmetic around the bill.
