Nearly 50 killed due to thunderstorm in North India, UP worst hit

thunderstorm_800x600More than 53 people were killed and several others got injured on  May 13 as heavy rain and thunderstorm hit various states, including Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Delhi-NCR etc Home Ministry said. Nearly 50 people were injured in Uttar Pradesh and 11 in Delhi.
Ministry spokesperson reveals that 39 people were killed in Uttar Pradesh alone, 9 in Andhra Pradesh, four in West Bengal and one person in Delhi-NCR.
Lakhimpur Kheri saw the maximum amount of damage with 84 houses and buildings collapsed partially or completely during the storm, followed by Sambhal where 31 buildings were totally damaged.
Government sources revealed that eight persons died in Bareilly. Kasganj reported six deaths while Barabanki reported five deaths. These deaths were caused by falling trees, collapsing of buildings, walls during the storm.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has issued directions to the district administration to distribute relief material to the victims’ families immediately.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has said that her government would provide assistance to affected families as well as to those whose houses and crops have been damaged.
The CM has further said that “We do not have control over the nature. We will not be able to bring back those who have died, but our government will be beside these families and help them in every possible manner.”
