The National Commission for Women (NCW) on Wednesday took suo motu cognisance of reports surrounding the suspicious death of 33-year-old Twisha Sharma, a former Miss Pune, in Bhopal, barely five months after her marriage.
In a strongly worded communication issued to the Madhya Pradesh government, the NCW sought a detailed Action Taken Report (ATR) within seven days. The Commission said it had taken note of media reports highlighting the circumstances surrounding Sharma’s death and the allegations made by her family.
Police have registered an FIR against Sharma’s husband, advocate Samarth Singh, and her mother-in-law, retired judge Giribala Singh, under charges related to dowry death and harassment.

According to Sharma’s family, she had allegedly been subjected to mental and physical harassment by her in-laws. The family also claimed that there were visible injury marks on her body, alleging that the injuries were inflicted before her death.
Her relatives have demanded a fresh post-mortem examination at AIIMS Delhi. Speaking to reporters, the family’s lawyer, Anurag Shrivastava, said an application seeking a second post-mortem had been submitted before the concerned magistrate in Bhopal.
The case has sparked widespread attention, with the NCW closely monitoring developments and seeking accountability from the state authorities.
