Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday accused the Centre of delaying a decision on permission for the National Conference’s proposed July 20 protest in New Delhi demanding the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood, saying the party would go ahead with its plans regardless.
The National Conference has announced a demonstration near Jantar Mantar on July 20 as part of its campaign for the restoration of statehood. The party has also invited leaders of the INDIA bloc and several regional parties to participate in the protest.
Addressing reporters, Omar said the party would not alter its programme despite the recent death of his uncle, Dr Mustafa Kamal, younger brother of National Conference president Farooq Abdullah.
“Mustafa Sahab would not have wanted to have any change in that (programme). His condition deteriorated on July 11 and doctors told us he might not survive. But Farooq Sahab directed me that our Jammu event on July 12 should continue, no matter what…. The July 20 programme would also certainly happen,” Omar said.
He also criticised the Centre for not making its position clear on the request for permission to hold the protest.
Omar said National Conference leaders would travel to Delhi on July 19 even if no decision had been communicated by then, underscoring the party’s resolve to press ahead with its campaign for the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood.
