Mumbai: Train services on the busy Mumbai–Pune railway corridor were suspended on Sunday after heavy monsoon rains triggered multiple landslides in the Karjat–Lonavala (Bhor Ghat) section, severely disrupting rail operations.
According to Central Railway, landslides were reported near Thakurwadi and on the middle line between Khandala and Monkey Hill at around 3:05 am. Debris from the landslides blocked all three railway lines in the ghat section, forcing authorities to suspend train services while restoration work began.
The disruption resulted in the cancellation of 16 trains, while nine trains were diverted. Several other services were short-terminated, short-originated or rescheduled due to the blockage. Railway officials advised passengers to check the latest train status before travelling.
The heavy rainfall also affected road connectivity between Mumbai and Pune. A landslide near the Khopoli–Kusgaon Missing Link tunnel disrupted vehicular movement, prompting authorities to divert traffic and issue travel advisories.
Railway teams, along with engineering staff, were deployed immediately to clear debris and restore the tracks. However, continuous rainfall in the ghat section has slowed restoration efforts.
Authorities said restoration work is underway and train services will resume once the tracks are declared safe for operations. Meanwhile, passengers have been urged to stay updated through official railway announcements before planning their journey.
