Mumbai: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall with isolated spells of extremely heavy rain over the next 24 hours. The weather department has also forecast gusty winds reaching speeds of 50–60 kmph, urging residents to remain cautious as monsoon activity intensifies.
The warning comes as relentless monsoon rains have claimed five lives across Maharashtra in separate rain-related incidents over the past four days. According to reports, the fatalities include three deaths in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, while two others were reported from Pune and Thane.
Heavy rainfall has caused widespread waterlogging in several parts of Mumbai, disrupting road traffic and slowing suburban train services in some areas. Authorities have advised people to avoid unnecessary travel and stay away from low-lying areas prone to flooding.
As a precautionary measure, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) ordered the closure of schools and colleges for the afternoon session on Saturday. Emergency response teams have been placed on high alert, while civic authorities continue to monitor vulnerable locations across the city.
The IMD has also extended the red alert to parts of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, including Thane, Palghar and Raigad, warning of the possibility of flooding, landslides and further disruption to normal life if the intense rainfall continues over the weekend.
