New Delhi: Thousands of users across the world faced difficulties accessing Facebook and Instagram on Friday after a widespread outage disrupted several services operated by Meta. Users reported being unexpectedly logged out of their accounts, facing login failures, blank screens and error messages while trying to access the platforms.
According to outage-tracking platform Downdetector, reports of problems surged rapidly, with thousands of complaints linked to Facebook and thousands more involving Instagram. Users from multiple countries reported issues, suggesting that the disruption was global in nature rather than being limited to a specific region.
The outage also appeared to affect other Meta services, including Messenger and, in some regions, WhatsApp’s web platform. While some mobile applications continued to function intermittently, many users struggled to log in or access key features across Meta’s ecosystem.
Meta acknowledged the disruption, with company spokesperson Andy Stone stating that the company was aware users were experiencing problems accessing its services and that engineers were working to resolve the issue. However, the company did not immediately disclose the cause of the outage or provide a timeline for full restoration.
As the outage spread, users flocked to other social media platforms, particularly X, to share updates, report issues and post memes about the disruption. Hashtags related to Facebook and Instagram outages quickly began trending in several countries.
The incident marks one of the most significant service disruptions for Meta’s platforms in recent months. The company continues to monitor the situation, while millions of users and businesses worldwide await the complete restoration of services.
