Former J&K Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has hailed the appointment of Suman Kumari as Pakistan’s first Hindu woman judge, saying it was heartening to see Pakistan allowing its minorities to play a role in nation building.
“Heartening to see Pakistan allowing minorities to play a role in nation building. I hope this development allows them to revisit their blasphemy laws,” Mehbooba tweeted.
However, the first judge from the Hindu community was Justice Rana Bhagwandas, who rose through the ranks and served as the acting chief justice for brief periods between 2005 and 2007.
Hindu community comprises 2 per cent of Pakistan’s total population.
