Shillong: Meghalaya Police have announced that they will challenge the bail granted to Sonam Raghuvanshi, the prime accused in the sensational Raja Raghuvanshi murder case. Director General of Police (DGP) Idashisha Nongrang confirmed that the department is preparing to move a higher court against the order, arguing that the case remains serious and requires continued judicial scrutiny.
The case, which attracted nationwide attention, relates to the murder of Indore-based businessman Raja Raghuvanshi during a honeymoon trip to Meghalaya. Investigators allege that Sonam Raghuvanshi played a central role in a conspiracy that led to her husband’s death. Meghalaya Police have repeatedly maintained that they possess substantial evidence supporting the prosecution’s case.
Speaking to reporters, DGP Nongrang said the state police are not satisfied with the bail order and have initiated legal steps to challenge it. She emphasized that the department remains committed to pursuing the case and ensuring that the investigation and trial proceed without hindrance.
The DGP also addressed criticism regarding an alleged procedural error by investigators that reportedly contributed to the bail decision. According to her, the issue was limited to a single document in which a legal provision was incorrectly cited. She clarified that the transit remand and other crucial legal procedures had been carried out under the correct sections of law and that the error did not affect the substance of the investigation.
Police officials have argued that the alleged lapse was technical in nature and should not overshadow the broader evidence gathered during the probe. The department maintains that the overall case remains strong and that the integrity of the investigation has not been compromised.
The decision to challenge the bail order marks the latest development in one of the country’s most closely watched criminal cases. The matter is now expected to move before a higher court, where Meghalaya Police will seek cancellation of Sonam Raghuvanshi’s bail as the murder trial continues.
