New Delhi: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) on Tuesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish Compressed Bio-Gas (CBG) plants in the national capital using cattle dung generated by dairies and gaushalas. The initiative aims to scientifically process dairy waste and prevent it from polluting the Yamuna River.
The agreement was signed in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu, Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Rajiv Ranjan Singh, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, and other senior officials.
Under the NDDB model, cattle dung collected from dairies and gaushalas across Delhi will be transported directly to bio-gas and organic manure plants. The project is expected to convert dairy waste into Compressed Bio-Gas (CBG) and organic fertiliser, reducing pollution while promoting sustainable waste management.
Officials said the initiative will help prevent untreated cattle waste from being dumped into drains and eventually flowing into the Yamuna River. It is also expected to improve sanitation around dairy clusters, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and generate clean energy and organic manure.
During the event, MCD Mayor Pravesh Wahi and NDDB Chairman Dr. Meenesh C. Shah exchanged the signed agreement documents. The project is part of the government’s broader efforts to promote a circular economy, strengthen waste-to-energy initiatives and improve the environmental health of the national capital.
Authorities said the collaboration is expected to serve as a model for other cities dealing with large volumes of dairy waste and urban pollution.
