Massive Road Accident in MP Kills 12 members of family, 8 others injured

Twelve members of a family from Gwalior District in Madhya Pradesh were killed and eight others were injured in a massive road accident while they were on their way to attend the last rites of their relative, a police official said.

The accident took place when a sand-laden tractor-trolley collided with the overloaded jeep carrying 20 people on June 21 morning around 5.30 at a crossroad near Ganjrampur village, in Morena, 456 km from capital Bhopal, Morena Superintendent of Police Amit Sanghi reportedly said.

He added that 12 of the victims died on the spot and eight others who sustained injuries in the accident were referred to the district hospital for treatment.

The police also claimed that the insurance of the jeep had expired in September 2014 but the vehicle was registered as a taxi and continued to ferry passengers.

The driver of the tractor-trolley, carrying sand mined illegally from the National Chambal Sanctuary, fled the spot after the accident, Sanghi said.

Police said a case has been registered against the driver and a probe is initiated regarding the accident.

Police confirmed five women are among the dead.
