At least 27 people were killed and 63 others injured after a massive fire ripped through a popular pub in northern Bangkok, Thailand, late Sunday night. Authorities said 22 of the injured remain in critical condition, making it one of the deadliest entertainment venue fires in the country in recent years.
According to Thai authorities, the blaze broke out shortly before midnight at the Rong Beer Na Lat Phrao pub in Bangkok’s Chatuchak district. Initial investigations suggest the fire may have started due to an electrical short circuit in a ceiling-mounted air-conditioning unit before rapidly spreading through the venue.
Officials said many patrons were trapped inside as smoke quickly filled the building. Investigators found several victims near the restrooms, where they had reportedly tried to escape the flames. Emergency exits were allegedly obstructed by furniture and beer crates, making evacuation difficult. Firefighters brought the blaze under control within about 30 minutes.
Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul visited the site and ordered a thorough investigation into the incident. Forensic teams are examining the cause of the fire, while authorities are also reviewing whether the venue complied with fire safety regulations and emergency exit requirements.
The tragedy has once again raised concerns over fire safety standards at entertainment venues in Thailand, which has witnessed several deadly nightclub and pub fires over the years.
